Our Fruits and
How to Care for Them
STRAWBERRIES At Parlee Farms,
we have two picking seasons for strawberries. The traditional New
England varieties are known as “June Bearers”. We have eight varieties
available for picking from early June until mid-July. From mid-August
until late September, we offer two varieties of late season strawberries.
So now you can enjoy fresh picked strawberries from Parlee Farms
for most of the summer!
A few hints on caring for those strawberries when you get them
home:
* Do not rinse berries or remove stems until you are ready to use
them to keep the juice in the berries.
* Protect them from sunlight and store in a cool place.
* Best when used 2-3 days after picking.
Freezing Tips:
Wash berries and drain in colander. Remove stems and slice (or crush)
berries as you stem them. If additional sweetness is desired, add
3/4 cup of sugar to 4 cups of sliced berries. Stir and let stand
until the sugar dissolves (just a few minutes). Place in freezer
containers leaving 1/2 inch head space for expansion and put immediately
into freezer.
BLUEBERRIES Available for
picking from mid-July until early September, Parlee Farms has over
10 varieties of blueberries during the season. Blueberries rank
number one in antioxidant activity, as compared with 40 other fruits
and vegetables. Antioxidants may help slow some signs of aging,
such as short-term memory loss, as well as fighting heart disease
and cancer. Blueberries also may aid in preventing urinary tract
infections. One cup of fresh blueberries has about 85 calories.
They have their greatest flavor if they are left on the bush for
seven to ten days after turning blue. So always look for the bluest
berry when picking! Blueberries should not be washed until you are
ready to use them. They have a long shelf life - almost two weeks
for dry, refrigerated berries. One quart of fresh blueberries weights
about 1-1/2 pounds and will yield 5-6 servings. Freezing Tips:
Sort through blueberries, remove stems, and place in containers.
Do not wash berries before freezing, but wash frozen berries before
using.
RASPBERRIES We now have summer
and fall raspberry picking. For the month of July, summer raspberries
are ready for picking. We have four varieties and all have great
flavor - true delicacies! Fall raspberry picking at Parlee Farms
is from mid-August until the end of September. We have four varieties
of fall red raspberries, including ‘Polana’ and ‘Caroline’.
One cup of fresh raspberries has
about 70 calories and is high in Vitamin C. Look for raspberries
that are firm, dry, plump, and rich in color with the stem attached.
They are very perishable, with a 2-3 day shelf life. Pick
them early in the day, refrigerate quickly in a covered container,
and wash before using. Freezing Tips: After selecting
fully ripe berries, sort and place in containers. Do not wash berries
before freezing, but wash frozen berries before using.
CUT FLOWERS In addition to
our wonderful fruits, we offer cut-your-own and fresh picked flowers
from mid-July through late September. We have 15 colors of gladiolus,
10 shades of ‘Benary Giant’ zinnias, 5 varieties of beautiful sunflowers,
and gorgeous dahlias. Bring some color into your home this summer!
APPLES On the fall weekends,
hayrides are included in the price of the apple bag. We
have over fourteen acres of dwarf apple trees which, although small
in stature, produce large, delicious apples. From late August until
mid-October, we have over 20 different varieties of apples available
including Macintosh, Gala, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Cortland, Royal Empire,
Decoster Jonagold, Cameo, and Golden Delicious. Call ahead to find
out what varieties are available on any given day. We also have apple cider donuts,
apple crisp, and pasteurized cider available during the fall.
PUMPKINS We grow over nine
acres of pumpkins in all sizes and shapes, from mini-pumpkins to
pumpkins topping the scales at over 40 pounds. Enjoy the crisp fall
air and warm sunshine while picking out the perfect jack-o-lantern!
To help with your decorating, we have available our own corn stalks
and hardy mums.
